Abstract:
Membrane bioreactors applied to wastewater treatment in which membranes are used for biomass separation provide many advantages over conventional treatment.
Application of membrane bioreactor in the municipal wastewater was until recently limited because the high cost of the membrane and the energy needed for filtration, but due to increased legal requirements for the quality of treated wastewater and for development of membrane technology today there are more of plants in use. Because of their advantages and possible wider use in the treatment of municipal wastewater were carried out research to determine the capabilities and limitations of the MBR of the device. Considering the results of the research is possible to expect expansion of the MBR technology in the treatment of municipal wastewater.
Performance of MBR equipped with an immersed hollow fibre membrane treating municipal wastewater was investigated. MBR removed more than 92% COD present in the wastewater and more than 98% present BOD along with very stable denitrification with low assimilation of ammonium into biomass. A very successful biodegradation of linear alkyl benzene sulphonates and alkyl phenol polyethoxylates was achieved without significant accumulation of persistent lipophylic oligomers in the effluent. A very low excess sludge production was also achieved with sludge concentration stabilized for certain feed to microorganism ratio. In cultivations without any feed, decrease of floc size was observed, with rate of suspended solids decrease of 0,38-0,58 gL-1day-1 while keeping nitrifying activity and satisfactory level of specific respiration of the activated sludge.
